Anderson, H.W., and Anderson, G.S. (1981). Mom and dad are divorced but I'm not: Parenting after divorce. Chicago: Nelson-Hall. The Anderson's book revealed some of the damaging effects of divorce on children but also had some defensive statements for divorce by one of their sources.

Berry, K.K. (1981). The male single-parent . In I.R. Stuart and L.E. Abt. (Eds.). Children of separation and divorce: Management and treatment . (pp. 34-52). Atlanta: Van Nostrand Reinhold. Kenneth K. Berry, Ph.D. has compiled information in regard to the custody of children by parents of divorce. He gives his findings of the father's status, the effects of divorce on children, their lifestyles, friends and social life, and child care. He brings out the problems of the male single-parent, the rewards and their many needs.

Doob, C.B. (1994). Sociology: An Introduction . 4th ed. Philadelphia: Harcourt Brace. Christopher Doob uses some experienced researchers of the divorce field to name some influencing factors for the divorce rate, role definitions changing within marriage, how legal and social constraints are changing, and the consequences of divorce for the couple and for the children.

Doob, C.B. (1995). Social Problems . Philadelphia: Harcourt Brace. Doob reveals the negative and long-term effects of divorce on children and how it puts them in a state of being stranded. His research is from a study done by Judith Wallerstein showing that children's responses to divorce are age-related. His finding from Wallerstein's study show suicide as a response to divorce but in these cases other factors come into play.

Forehand, R., Nicholas, L., & Brody, G. (1988). Divorce and marital conflict: Relationship to adolescent competence and adjustment in early adolescence . In E.M. Hetherington & J.D. Arasteh (Eds.). Impact of divorce, single parenting, and stepparenting on children . (pp. 155-167). Hillsdale, New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. These researchers show that when the adolescence is trying to cope with the changing world around them, they are in need of a secure and stable home environment, and not one disrupted by conflict and divorce. The studies done for this section of the book provide information about the adjustment and functioning of adolescent-age children in relation to parental conflict and divorce. These studies are limited to the first year after divorce and surely need long-term research.

Hirsh, E.S. (1983). Problems of early childhood . New York: The Free Press. Elisabeth S. Hirsh discusses the rate in terms of percentages of married couples in the United States and says it becomes more complicated business as time goes on. She tells about effects on children due to remarriage, custody, the need for a solution, and the available options. Her study suggests some help practices for children, the role of the school, and the negative and positive effects of remarriage.

Hernandez, D.J. (1988). Demographic trends and the living arrangements of children . In E.M. Hetherington & J.D. Arasteh (Eds.). Impact of divorce, single parenting, and stepparenting on children . (pp. 3-22). Hillsdale, New Jersey: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. This researcher takes a closer look at the familial and socioeconomic circumstances of the children and describes the most important demographic trends that have influenced them. Next he discusses the importance of the parental living arrangements of the children and looks at the demographic data and presents an imaginary framework of child and family indicators.

Hetherington, E.M., Anderson, E.R., & Hagan, M.S. (1991). Divorce: Effects on adolescents . In R.M. Lerner, C. Petersen, & J. Brooks-Gunn (Eds.). Encyclopedia of adolescence . (pp. 237-240). New York: Garland Publishing. The authors of this article tell how experiences and reactions connected to parental divorce effect adolescents, how some adapt, how some never recover or how some have delayed effects to surface later during adolescence. They inform the reader of the various way adolescents cope with these experiences and some with positive effects.

Kelly, J.B. (1981). The visiting relationship after divorce: Research findings and clinical implications . In I.R. Stuart & L.E. Abt (Eds.). Children of separation and divorce: Management and treatment . (pp. 338-361). Atlanta: Van Norstrand Reinhold. As J.B. Kelly surveys the dramatic increase in the divorce rate in the United States, she indicates from her findings that the attention of the 1970s has shifted from clinical and research to, population at risk, the children of divorcing parents. She also studies visitation, how it is established, how long it last, and the parents influence on the children.

Medrich, E.A., Roizen, J., Rubin, V., & Buckley, S. (1982). The serious business of growing up: A study of children's lives outside school . Berkley, CA: University of California Press. This researcher tells of the school life of the children and the effects of idleness after school. Also, he reveals peer pressure on children and the need for child parent time together, organized activities, jobs, chores, and spending patterns.

Pfeffer, C.R. (1981). Developmental issues among children of separation and divorce . In I.R. Stuart & L.E. Abt (Eds.). Children of separation and divorce: Management and treatment . (pp. 19-32). Atlanta: Van Nostrand Reinhold. Cynthia R. Pfeffer, M.D. brings out some indications of divorce for child development, how their environment has changed to an open type family system, how divorce effects a child's intrapsychic development and that there is a need for future investigations.

Roman, M., and Haddad, W. (1978). The disposable parent . New York: Holt, Rhinehart and Wilson. These authors reveal how unfair the court system is to the absent father after divorce. Some say that it is from the anger of the women of divorce but the authors say that is totally unfair. They say that the criminal justice system is more compassionate on criminals than a court of law is to a parent of divorce.

Walczak, Y., & Burns, S. (1984). Divorce: The child's point of view . London: Harper & Row. The authors of this book studied children of divorce based on personal conversations with children. They attempt to transfer the views of children based on their experiences of divorce.

Wallerstein, J.S., & Shauna, B.C. (1988). Children of divorce: A 10-year Study . In E.M. Hetherington and J.D. Arasteh (Eds.). Impact of divorce, single parenting, and stepparenting on children . (pp. 197-212). Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. The studies done by these researchers have shown that contrary to earlier findings of the same study, it appears that there is a greater impact on the older children, especially girls entering into adulthood. These studies also show that there is a correlation between the outcome of the child and the quality of the parent-child or stepparent-child relationships after divorce and in the remarried family.

Wong, D.L. (1995). Nursing care of infants and children . Baltimore: Mosbey. The research of this author shows how the intact family unit is a health providing system for the child because of a caring, supportive surrounding. This enables the child to grow, mature, and maximize their potential. She also discusses how the family beliefs are impacted by social, cultural, and religious influences.

Viano, E.C. (1975). Social problems and criminal justice . Chicago: Nelson-Hall. This author speaks of the types and causes of family disorganization, and states that society influences the disruption of the family by its values, pressures, and structure. These influences cause the family, or at times some social agencies, to deal with issues such as illegitimacy, incarceration, war, or divorce. The problems of child delinquency, mentally handicapped, dependent or neglected children or children in need of supervision are problems that the juvenile court is dealing with.
